Coaster Mania!

Wow!  It’s going to be a crazy few  weeks.

Here’s what’s going on.  Basically, among other things, I have to make about 800  of my coasters over the next couple of weeks.

I have two wholesale orders to fill.  I make my coasters from scratch – from cutting the wood for the base, to creating (or fixing) the images, to the final coat of sealant.  I totally love doing it but I’ve had to go into overdrive to meet demand of late.  (this is sooooo not a complaint!).

Rose Bowl Market  

If any of you are in the LA area please do stop by tomorrow (Sunday 7.10).  But get there early when its cooler! My booth is F16 in the Antiques and Collectables Section and it would be terrific to meet you.  I’ve been selling at the Rose Bowl for about a year and I’m bringing a couple of the pieces that I blogged about here recently with me this time along with my coasters and other things.

Unique LA

 I’m very excited to have been accepted into the Unique LA craft show  which is coming up July 30th and 31st.  It looks like it’s going to be amazing!  They even have contests about how well you’ve designed your booth or table.  So, apparently my usual “table cloths and a pleasant demeanor” isn’t going to cut it this time.  Plus they are anticipating 15,000 (yes that comma is in the right place) visitors over the two days.  I’m gonna have to work my butt off to create enough inventory.

Bar Keeper 

A really, really cool store in the Silver Lake area of LA is now stocking my coasters as well.  If you’re in that part of town please do yourself a favor and check out Barkeeper – they have the most amazing inventory of vintage barware and accoutrements.

Aaaaand, of course, I’ve managed to schedule some big house fixing up projects at exactly the same time.  My workroom is still in progress.  The electricians are here rewiring the garage to make it into my ultimate workshop but at the moment there IS NO POWER!!!  and the tile guys and plumbers come next week to rip out the bathroom.

So ACK! and Yay!!!!!!

I’ve been surrounded by amazingly creative people my whole life. My mom can, and does, make anything. The family has on occasion speculated that she just whipped up my dad one day when she discovered some left over fabric and stuffing. My three sisters have mad skills ranging from needlework to cooking to out and out ART. My father’s desk when I was growing up had a model train set going around it, oh, and he made that desk-from scratch. I’m the youngest and, as you can imagine, it’s a hard series of acts to follow. Truth be told, I’ve spent many, many years suppressing the creative instincts I learned at home. But I realized (rather late in life) that few things bring me more joy than making and creating. For the longest time when I went to stores I didn’t think, “I want that” I thought, “I can make that.” And, with a deep breath and a leap, I’ve started on a very new, kinda scary path. I’ve given up my steady, dependable (dull!) corporate life to spend my days happily humming away in my garage designing, creating, painting, decoupaging and sawing and, since this blog will be an honest take on things, there is also a fair amount of tripping, spilling and swearing. Through this blog I hope to share with you the struggles and (hopefully) triumphs of a very non-businessy business person. I also hope to make this blog a resource for people who like to work with their hands and who are, like me, always looking at things and thinking “I could make that!” I’ve lived many places since I left Cheltenham Road; I currently live in Los Angeles California. So, with this preamble- Welcome to Cheltenham Road! Please come on over and make yourself comfortable – the place is always open.
